Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has declared that the campaign for Quebec independence is already in motion, attributing its initiation to the Canadian prime minister. Addressing a large audience of party members at a PQ convention in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, St-Pierre Plamondon pointed to recent statements made by Prime Minister Mark Carney as the catalyst for kickstarting the federalist “No” campaign.
During a speech earlier in the week regarding the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City, Carney characterized the 1759 battle as the commencement of a “partnership” between the French and English communities in Canada and emphasized the importance of national unity. St-Pierre Plamondon interpreted Carney’s remarks as a foreshadowing of future developments.
“A new political era has indeed dawned, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter in our collective narrative,” declared the PQ leader. “Mr. Carney, Quebec’s existence is not owed to Canada. Quite the contrary, Quebec has thrived in its distinctiveness and uniqueness despite its association with Canada,” he proclaimed, prompting an enthusiastic standing ovation from the fervent PQ supporters in attendance.
St-Pierre Plamondon vehemently criticized Carney on Friday, denouncing him as a proponent of a “long history of colonialism” that traces back to Lord Durham. “This legacy perpetuates the distortion of facts and history, perpetually feeding us falsehoods through federal institutions,” he asserted. “We are determined to break free from British colonial influence and establish our sovereign nation.”
