Meta Faces Backlash and Retracts Controversial Instagram AI Feature

Instagram users have been known to enhance their photos with various filters and techniques to improve their appearance. Therefore, it was not unexpected when Meta, the parent company of Instagram, introduced new generative AI effects to elevate content quality.

However, following backlash, Meta decided to retract a significant feature of this new tool. Shortly after its launch, the company disabled a feature that allowed AI users to link an Instagram account and generate images incorporating content from that account.

Instagram users needed to manually opt out to prevent others from creating photos using their content, assuming they were even aware of this feature. In response to the criticism, a Meta spokesperson stated in an email to CBC News that the feature had been removed due to feedback indicating that it missed the mark.

Initially launched on Tuesday, Muse Image offers over 30 new effects for Instagram stories and WhatsApp. It is set to be available on Facebook and Messenger in the future. According to Instagram’s blog, these effects can transform photos instantly and represent Meta’s first AI image generation model from the Meta Superintelligence Lab.

Despite the innovation, Muse Image only works on Instagram Stories and WhatsApp in the U.S. Currently, Canadians can access some new features directly on the Meta AI website. However, Meta AI permissions are automatically enabled for users with public accounts in other countries, including Canada, requiring manual deactivation.

As of the last update, Meta had not confirmed whether the controversial Instagram tagging feature would be reintroduced. Users and privacy experts raised concerns about this feature, prompting guides on opting out to circulate quickly.

To disable Meta AI permissions for Muse Image, users must access the settings on their mobile devices under the “Sharing and reuse” section. They can toggle off permissions such as allowing content reuse on Instagram and Meta AI, and creating and reusing original audio on Meta AI. Alternatively, users can make their accounts private for added privacy.

Muse Image, described as an intelligent creative partner by Meta, enables users to apply preset AI-generated effects or create custom effects using prompts. Users can mention someone’s account with the @ symbol to generate images using their photos, fostering fun and personalized content sharing on Instagram stories.

Concerns have been raised by experts like Katrina German regarding potential misuse of images and the necessity for users to manually opt out of such features. Meta’s extensive data collection practices and the need for user vigilance were also highlighted.

While Muse Image is not available in Canada yet, Meta allows users to test the tool on the Meta AI website by uploading photos or mentioning public Instagram accounts. Other platforms also offer similar AI image tools with varying levels of privacy safeguards and potential risks.
