The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) and the Village of Cumberland are urging residents to exercise caution following an incident where a black bear injured a person on Sunday. According to the BCCOS, two hikers with an unleashed dog were attacked by a family of black bears near the Bevan Wetlands. One of the hikers sustained injuries and was hospitalized but has since been discharged. The BCCOS stated that the bear attack was defensive in nature and did not actively search for the bear, although monitoring of the area will continue.
In a social media update, the Village of Cumberland is recommending visitors to be vigilant and watch out for signs of bears such as fresh droppings and tracks. Hikers are advised to travel in groups, leash their dogs, carry bear spray, and make noise while traversing wilderness areas. Any instances of aggressive bear behavior or encounters with wildlife can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service’s 24-hour RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
