A professor’s creative approach to funding his long-term study of yellow-bellied marmots has caught attention. Daniel Blumstein, facing financial challenges exacerbated by environmental research funding cuts, drew inspiration from a TV show to launch an OnlyFans account named “OnlyMarms.”
Despite OnlyFans’ reputation for explicit content, Blumstein’s project focuses on showcasing amusing images of marmots in a family-friendly manner. The initiative, which began in June, aims to engage the public by sharing weekly posts featuring individual marmots and their bios.
In an effort to raise funds, Blumstein’s team plans to hold a “Fat Marmot Week” starting on August 24, inviting the public to participate in a bracket-style tournament similar to Alaska’s “Fat Bear Week.” This event may also involve collaboration with Vancouver Island Marmots.
Blumstein’s research at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado delves into various aspects of yellow-bellied marmots, exploring aging patterns and responses to climate change. The study, ongoing since 1962, offers insights into aging and epigenetics, shedding light on how environmental factors influence genetic processes.
While OnlyMarms has generated around $3,000 in donations since its inception, Blumstein acknowledges the challenge of sustaining his research. He emphasizes the importance of continued support through direct donations to UCLA to ensure the project’s longevity.
Despite the unconventional funding method, Blumstein remains dedicated to advancing his marmot research amid financial constraints and hopes for increased backing to facilitate ongoing studies.
