Since the 1960s, Israel has been constructing settlements in the West Bank, a region considered as occupied Palestinian territory. These settlements are recognized as illegal under international law and have been criticized by the Canadian government. Alongside the development of these settlements, there have been numerous documented instances of violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians whose residences are being demolished to make way for the settlements.
A recent probe by CBC’s the fifth estate has revealed that Canadian charities have been indirectly supporting organizations, including the Israeli military, that back the continuous expansion of these settlements. Despite contravening the regulations governing registered Canadian charities, these charities have been issuing tax receipts for donations to these causes.
Host Ioanna Roumeliotis delves into her team’s investigative findings, shedding light on how these contributions are seen by critics as fueling violence that undermines the prospects for peace and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
