Czech Skier Jan Zabystran Claims First World Cup Victory

Date:

In a surprising turn of events at the Val Gardena World Cup super-G race, Czech skier Jan Zabystran claimed his first-ever World Cup victory, outpacing renowned Swiss skier Marco Odermatt by 0.22 seconds. Zabystran, starting with bib No. 29, became the first Czech man to win a World Cup event in the circuit’s 60-year history. The victory was attributed to Zabystran’s exceptional performance in the favorable lighting conditions on the course, with him expressing his joy at the unexpected win.

The Val Gardena race has seen unexpected winners before due to the late arrival of sunshine on the course, providing advantages to late starters like Zabystran. Despite his fortunate lighting conditions, Zabystran displayed skill and speed throughout the course, not solely relying on luck for his victory. Odermatt, who had secured a downhill win the previous day, had to settle for second place, with Giovanni Franzoni achieving a career-best third place finish.

The event also saw impressive performances from lower-ranked skiers like Matthieu Bailet and Christof Innerhofer, showcasing the unpredictability and competitiveness of the Val Gardena race. Zabystran’s victory marked a milestone in his career, surpassing his previous best World Cup result and establishing himself as a contender in the circuit. Odermatt, on the other hand, maintained his dominance in the overall World Cup standings, further solidifying his pursuit of a fifth consecutive title. Canadian skier Brodie Seger finished in 14th place, adding to the diverse mix of results at the prestigious event.
