In the depths of the jungle, a new serpent has emerged, bearing a name that resonates with fans of rock music. Researchers from the renowned Field Museum in Chicago have christened a newly discovered, harmless groundsnake from New Guinea as Lielaphis slashi, paying homage to the legendary guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, Slash.
This reddish-brown creature, measuring around 71 centimeters in length, has been officially designated as Slash’s groundsnake. The recognition holds special significance for Slash, described by the Field Museum as a devoted enthusiast of reptiles and a staunch advocate of zoos and museums.
Slash’s affinity for snakes has been evident throughout his career, notably forming the rock ensemble Slash’s Snakepit in 1994, which featured members from various iconic bands. In response to the accolade, Slash expressed deep honor and humility at having a snake species named after him, a moment he never envisaged.
Sara Ruane, the Field Museum’s associate curator of herpetology and lead author of a paper in Zootaxa documenting the new species, narrated her early fascination with reptiles, dating back to her childhood. Inspired by a magazine cover featuring Slash with his pet python, Ruane harbored a desire to name a snake after the musician, a dream that materialized years later through her scientific endeavors.
Slash’s groundsnake made its debut in 2006 during fieldwork in New Guinea by Chris Austin, a herpetology professor at Louisiana State University. The island, teeming with biodiversity, remains a challenging research terrain due to its dense forests and the elusive nature of snakes.
Despite its unassuming appearance, genetic analysis confirmed Lielaphis slashi as a distinct species within its genus. Unlike venomous counterparts, this groundsnake poses no threat to humans, primarily preying on small lizards and reptile eggs with its rear teeth. However, the species faces a more significant threat from human activities, including deforestation for coffee plantations and mining.
In addition to honoring Slash, naming the snake serves as a spotlight on an ecosystem still shrouded in mystery, emphasizing the importance of understanding and conserving these enigmatic creatures. As Guns N’ Roses once epitomized danger in the music world, this incarnation of Slash is a docile forest dweller, navigating the wilds of New Guinea while etching its mark in the annals of rock and roll legends.
