The first season of a newly established Filipino basketball league concluded in Prince George, B.C., bringing together diaspora players from the region for sports and cultural exchange. Basketball holds a special place in Filipino culture, with individuals like Erik Dilao aspiring to reach the NBA despite humble beginnings playing with improvised equipment like coconuts.
Residing in northern B.C., Dilao played a key role in founding the Filipino Basketball League (FBL). Every Saturday, players from various areas gathered at Prince George’s Connaught Youth Centre for games. The Filipino community in B.C. totals over 174,000 people, with around three-quarters born in the Philippines. In Prince George specifically, nearly 1,500 residents identify as Filipino, comprising approximately one percent of the total population.
The league attracted about 150 participants, including players, volunteers, and fans, engaging in five hours of games weekly among 10 teams. Teams were named after local communities like Quesnel and Williams Lake, as well as with creative names such as Thunderbird and the PG Hoopers. Team Burger emerged as the champion, showcasing a unique uniform featuring a burger, fries, and a soft drink.
Many FBL players are recent arrivals to Canada for work or education, using the weekly games as a way to connect with their roots and enjoy the sport they love. Amidst enthusiastic crowds, players shout out plays in Tagalog, adding a cultural touch to the games. The league’s success in 2025 sets the stage for further growth in 2026, with plans to welcome players from diverse backgrounds and expand into volleyball.
Despite the competitive spirit and lively atmosphere during games, the primary focus of the league remains on fostering a sense of community among its members in a new country. Dilao emphasizes the joy of coming together through sports, highlighting the league’s role in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants.
