Despite an increase in summer inoculations, health authorities report that the measles epidemic in northeastern British Columbia is continuing unabated. Dr. Rakel Kling, a medical health officer at Northern Health, notes that the virus is still spreading primarily in and around Fort St. John, with rapid transmission occurring within families. The outbreak, which is the most severe in the province since 2014, originated at a local elementary school and swiftly disseminated through various community settings, including businesses and the hospital.
As of October 23, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control documented a total of 245 confirmed cases across northern B.C., with the majority, 232 cases, concentrated in the northeast region. Dr. Kling expressed concern, stating that these numbers likely underestimate the actual prevalence due to unreported cases and unlinked infections within families.
Following the spring outbreak, there was a notable upsurge in vaccination rates during the summer months. Vaccination uptake surged by 45% in May, 117% in June, and 221% in July compared to the previous year, as per data from Northern Health. Although vaccination rates tapered off from August to September, they remained significantly higher than average, indicating widespread vaccination efforts.
Dr. Kling emphasized the importance of achieving a 95% vaccination coverage to establish herd immunity, a target not met in any northern region. In the northeast, vaccination coverage ranges between 60 to 70%, falling short of the recommended threshold. Northern Health’s projections suggest that Fort St. John could sustain at least five new cases daily in the near future, given the persistent high transmission rates, while other areas in northern B.C. exhibit minimal or no transmission.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kling underscored the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to combat the outbreak. She urged families with concerns about vaccinations to consult with healthcare professionals for guidance, emphasizing the severity of measles-related complications and the importance of prevention.
