Norwegian biathlon athlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken, a potential Olympic contender, has tragically passed away at the age of 27. The International Biathlon Union expressed deep sorrow upon learning of Bakken’s sudden death during a training camp in Italy. The athlete was discovered deceased in his lodging at a hotel in the alpine town of Lavaze in Italy’s Trentino region. Bakken had been dealing with myocarditis, a heart condition diagnosed in 2022, which led him to take a hiatus from competitive events.
Recognized as the reigning European champion in the 10-kilometer sprint and two relays, Bakken was actively preparing for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February. His accomplishments included securing four World Cup victories and claiming the season-long title in the mass start discipline during the 2021-22 season. The IBU President, Olle Dahlin, expressed profound shock and grief over Bakken’s unexpected passing, highlighting the athlete’s remarkable return to biathlon following a challenging period as a testament to his resilience and determination.
Dahlin emphasized that while it is incomprehensible to lose Bakken at such a young age, his memory will endure within the biathlon community. The IBU extended its condolences to Bakken’s family, friends, teammates, and the entire Norwegian biathlon fraternity during this challenging period.
