India is expressing interest in purchasing various energy products from Canada and is pushing for streamlined approval processes for projects to access new energy supplies. This message was conveyed by India’s high commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, during an interview with CBC News ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India. The visit aims to focus on securing new business agreements and initiating negotiations for a free trade agreement to diversify trade beyond the American market.
Patnaik emphasized India’s eagerness to procure crude oil, LPG, and LNG from Canada as there is a growing demand that even Canada alone cannot meet. Enhancing trade relations is seen as a way to improve the historical tensions between the two countries, especially following past conflicts.
The shift towards greater collaboration has been evident since Carney invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Alberta last year, leading to discussions on a comprehensive economic agreement. This partnership is expected to progress further during their upcoming meeting in Delhi.
India is particularly interested in acquiring more Canadian uranium to support its expanding nuclear sector, aiming to increase nuclear capacity significantly by 2047. The potential collaboration includes Indian companies exploring ownership stakes in Canadian uranium mines and adopting Canadian nuclear technology.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also supports closer trade ties with India, highlighting the mutual benefits in energy and agricultural sectors. Discussions are ongoing for a uranium supply agreement between India and Canada, with potential economic gains for both countries.
India’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on specific suppliers align with its goal to increase the share of gas in its energy mix. As the world’s fourth-largest buyer of LNG, India is seeking additional supply, with Canada positioned as a favorable supplier due to its LNG export projects.
Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Canada and India amid global economic challenges. Both countries aim to double their trade volume by the end of the decade, reflecting the positive reception and potential growth opportunities in the Indian market.
