University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, although not as renowned as a Nobel Prize recipient, has been honored with an Ig Nobel Prize. These awards, a humorous version of the esteemed Nobel Prizes, recognize the most unconventional and inventive academic research endeavors. Thurairajah and his team secured this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a urinal that prevents splashing.
Upon receiving the news from his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah vividly recalls his elation at the achievement. The team, including researchers from various countries, designed and tested several urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia, to identify the most effective splash-free model. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus as the preferred design due to its reduced splash and ease of cleaning compared to the Cornucopia.
