Saskatchewan Roughriders enthusiasts are in for a treat as they will soon have the opportunity to indulge in food and alcoholic beverages outdoors near Mosaic Stadium, following the unveiling of the anticipated tailgating legislation by the province. The recently introduced Tailgating Act modifies the Alcohol Control Regulations in the province to permit tailgating in a parking lot adjacent to the Roughriders stadium specifically during home games.
According to Craig Reynolds, the CEO and President of the Roughriders, the change allowing tailgating for season ticket-holders exclusively aims to reward fans rather than solely improve the team’s financial status. Reynolds mentioned that the anticipated high demand among season ticket members will likely lead to pregame festivities before entering the stadium.
The plan is to initiate the tailgating experience with a manageable number of individuals initially and potentially expand it in the future, Reynolds explained. If the legislation is approved, supervision of the tailgating area will be carried out by staff from Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL), enforcing clear conduct expectations and controlling vehicle access, as outlined by the province.
Alana Ross, the minister overseeing the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, emphasized that the regulations will include a mandatory permit requirement and close collaboration with SLGA. She expressed confidence in a successful collaboration to ensure a positive experience for Riders fans, alongside benefits for the team and the City of Regina.
The provincial legislation was spurred by the Roughriders’ initiative earlier this year, noted Reynolds, who also mentioned seeking insights from other CFL teams like Calgary and Edmonton regarding their tailgating policies. Reynolds highlighted his intention to explore tailgating models from different markets, including drawing inspiration from the Buffalo Bills, where their head coach previously played.
The updated regulations are anticipated to be in effect for the 2026 CFL season, initially limited to events at Mosaic Stadium during Saskatchewan Roughriders home games. Following the conclusion of the 2026 CFL season, the province hinted at the possibility of expanding eligibility for tailgating activities beyond the initial scope.
