A Saskatchewan artist has commemorated the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Grey Cup triumph with a fresh tribute logo. The Riders clinched a 25-17 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in an intense finale on Sunday evening, securing Saskatchewan’s first Grey Cup championship since 2013.
In honor of the win, Chris Chipak, an artist and illustrator from Red Pheasant Cree Nation near North Battleford, crafted a design incorporating elements from an earlier Indigenous logo he had designed for the Riders, which has gained significant popularity among fans. The new artwork showcases the Grey Cup alongside silhouettes of the team’s other four trophies in the background.
The centerpiece of the design is a single feather rising from the trophy, illuminated by the radiant sun in the backdrop. Below, a buffalo is depicted at the base, with its mane transforming into roots that extend across the ground. Chipak shared that his inspiration for the design struck him while watching the championship game and observing fans donning his previous work.
Last season, Chipak introduced the Indigenous Riders logo, featuring symbols like the buffalo, river, sun, and the iconic “S” between two feathers, in alignment with the team’s Truth and Reconciliation initiative. The logo, released in full color earlier this year, has garnered a strong following among fans, particularly Indigenous families who have embraced it wholeheartedly.
Chipak emphasized that the new design aims to honor the pride and passion associated with the victory and the strong bond the team has forged with supporters throughout the province. In addition to the logo, Chipak also created a digital illustration of Riders running back A.J. Ouellette in anticipation of the championship game, further fueling excitement among fans.
By capturing the essence of the historic win, Chipak envisions the new design serving as a lasting reminder of the team’s achievement and the unifying power of sports in bringing people together across Saskatchewan.
