Valerie Grenier did not replicate her success from Saturday in the second leg of the Mont-Tremblant alpine skiing World Cup. Julia Scheib from Austria claimed victory in the giant slalom event on Sunday, while Grenier, hailing from St-Isidore, Ont., veered off course with just three gates remaining in her first run after securing a bronze medal in Saturday’s giant slalom.
Reflecting on her performance, Grenier expressed disappointment, stating that a minor error after a gate caused her to nearly spin 180 degrees. Despite being in a promising position, this mistake disrupted her run. The 29-year-old, who honed her skills at Mont-Tremblant, was trailing closely behind leaders Alice Robinson of New Zealand and Scheib.
Scheib’s winning time of 2:13.00 secured her second World Cup victory of the season. Grenier, on the other hand, acknowledged mixed feelings about her run, highlighting both successes and minor errors. She emphasized the need to continue working on her performance.
Scheib’s triumph marked her third giant slalom medal this season, following her gold in Soelden and silver in Copper Mountain. Sara Hector from Sweden claimed second place with a time of 2:13.57, while Alice Robinson, the winner of Saturday’s giant slalom, finished third in 2:13.78.
In the final moments of the competition, Scheib delivered a remarkable second run, challenging Robinson to maintain her pace. However, a late mistake by Robinson caused her to slip to third place. Despite this setback, Robinson expressed overall satisfaction with her recent performances.
Britt Richardson from Canmore, Alta., finished 12th after a strong opening run, being the sole Canadian skier in the second run. Richardson highlighted the need for consistency in her performance while acknowledging the positives from the weekend.
With Scheib now trailing Robinson by 12 points in the giant slalom standings, the competition remains intense. The standings see Shiffrin leading the overall rankings with a substantial lead over her competitors.
The Mont-Tremblant World Cup event showcased thrilling performances and competitive skiing, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
