“Bamboo to Metal: Hong Kong’s Scaffold Debate”

Date:

Daisy Pak faced and conquered her fear of heights to pursue a career as a bamboo scaffolder in Hong Kong. Tasked with constructing bamboo lattices high up on buildings, she found a deep passion for working with this traditional material. Transitioning from a nightclub job, Pak expressed how bamboo scaffolding has significantly transformed her life.

This passion for bamboo scaffolding came under scrutiny following a tragic incident last year. On November 26, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at a Hong Kong apartment complex undergoing renovation. The fire, which lasted over 40 hours, claimed the lives of at least 168 people and displaced nearly 5,000 residents. The incident prompted investigations and led to arrests related to potential manslaughter and corruption charges.

The technique of bamboo scaffolding, deeply rooted in ancient Chinese architecture, has been a longstanding practice in Hong Kong. Despite its historical significance and cultural ties, concerns over safety and structural integrity have led to a gradual shift towards metal scaffolding in the region. The government has initiated plans to transition to metal scaffolds in new construction projects to enhance safety standards and align with global practices.

While bamboo scaffolding offers advantages such as flexibility and cost-effectiveness, the move towards metal scaffolding is driven by considerations of durability and safety. Industry experts emphasize the need for stricter safety measures and the adoption of modern construction standards to ensure the well-being of workers and residents alike. Despite the ongoing transition, some believe that bamboo scaffolding will continue to have a place in specific applications, such as maintenance of older buildings.

As the construction landscape evolves, the debate between bamboo and metal scaffolding persists, highlighting the need for a balanced approach that prioritizes both tradition and innovation. Daisy Pak, reflecting on her journey, remains committed to her craft, underscoring the enduring significance of bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong’s construction heritage.
