Right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease has inked a seven-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, marking the largest free-agent deal in the franchise’s history. The agreement, valued at $210 million US, was confirmed by the Blue Jays after initial reports surfaced last week.
Cease, known for his impressive pitching abilities, will bolster the Blue Jays’ rotation alongside the current American League champions. He debuted in the MLB in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox and delivered a solid performance last season with the San Diego Padres, boasting an 8-12 record and a 4.55 earned-run average in 32 starts. Notably, Cease ranked sixth in the majors with 215 strikeouts and pitched 168 innings while walking 71 batters.
The contract terms reveal that Cease will receive a $23 million signing bonus on Jan. 15, with subsequent annual salaries as follows: $22 million in 2026, $30 million in 2027, $29 million in 2028, $28 million in 2029, $27 million in 2030, $26 million in 2031, and $25 million in 2032. Additionally, the deal includes deferred payments to Cease, with $64 million spread out over the years until 2046.
Cease, who has consistently made 32 or more starts per season over the last five years, will have a limited no-trade provision in his contract, granting him the right to block trades to eight specific teams without his consent. The talented pitcher, who spent the first five years of his career with the White Sox before joining the Padres, has garnered impressive statistics and accolades, including multiple seasons with over 200 strikeouts.
Joining the Blue Jays, Cease will be a key player in a formidable rotation that includes other top-tier pitchers like Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Jose Berrios. His signing surpasses the previous record deal held by George Springer with a six-year, $150 million agreement. Cease’s track record of success and consistent performance make him a valuable addition to the Blue Jays as they aim to build on their recent successes in the league.
In a related move, the Blue Jays are also in the final stages of securing a three-year, $30 million deal with right-hander Cody Ponce. The 31-year-old, who recently garnered MVP honors in the Korea Baseball Organization, is expected to further strengthen the Blue Jays’ pitching roster. Ponce, a former second-round draft pick, last pitched in the majors in 2021 with Pittsburgh and brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team.
The Blue Jays’ strategic acquisitions of Cease and Ponce underscore their commitment to enhancing their pitching options and remaining competitive in the MLB landscape.
