Odhran McLaughlin faced a challenging task of rounding up 15,000 crabs that escaped from an overturned truck on a highway in the middle of the night. Owner of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery in Burnfoot, Ireland, McLaughlin was initially unaware that the truck was carrying live crabs when he received the call about the accident in County Donegal.
The truck, transporting $97,000 worth of brown crabs caught by Irish fishermen, was en route to Portugal when it skidded off the road. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed, but the container holding the crabs broke open, allowing the creatures to scatter.
Upon arriving at the scene, McLaughlin found the crabs scurrying across the highway and into a nearby field close to the sea. With no experience handling crustaceans, he sought help from villagers in Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville, including crab fishermen, a veterinarian, and numerous volunteers.
It took approximately 80 individuals, including men, women, and children, nearly 18 hours to gather the crabs, place them in sandbags, and hoist them back into the container using a crane. Despite the efforts, some crabs did not survive, while a few managed to escape.
McLaughlin mentioned that most of the rescued crabs, originally intended for restaurants, would now be disposed of due to their unsuitability for consumption post-accident. The cause of the mishap remains unclear, but McLaughlin speculated that unfamiliarity with rural roads in Donegal might have contributed to the incident.
Reflecting on the ordeal, McLaughlin expressed his exhaustion and aversion to encountering crabs in the future, emphasizing the unforgettable community effort that aided in rescuing the stranded crustaceans.
