Leonard Graham Crawford believes in the unifying power of music and advocates for its accessibility to all individuals. After experiencing homelessness for nine years, Crawford has been receiving assistance from Grace Place in Thunder Bay, Ontario, a charitable organization that provides free meals, clothing, and a seasonal shelter program.
Recently, clients at Grace Place were treated to a special piano performance by Mike Boguski, the talented keyboardist of the renowned Canadian rock band Blue Rodeo. Crawford expressed how music has a calming effect and brings people together, offering a respite from life’s challenges.
Grace Place, which serves approximately 300 meals daily, has initiated its Out of the Cold program for the winter season, providing 25 emergency beds. The organization aims to address the increasing need for support, especially during times of rising living costs.
As part of his “tour within a tour,” Boguski has been visiting various communities across the province to offer free solo performances at local shelters and outreach centers. His goal is to share the healing joy of music with those who may not have access to live performances due to financial constraints.
Melody Macsemchuk, the operations manager at Grace Place, emphasized the positive impact of such musical experiences on their clients, who often cannot afford concert tickets. The performance resonated with individuals like Robert Esquega, a member of the Red Rock Indian Band, who found the music uplifting and energizing.
In addition to the musical event, Thunder Bay’s Homeless and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub provided a free vaccination clinic at Grace Place, addressing the health needs of the community. As winter approaches, the organization is seeking donations of warm clothing like jackets and socks to support those in need.
Grace Place also welcomes monetary contributions and grocery items, which are utilized to assist clients directly or in preparing meals. Collaborating with other shelters, the organization ensures that individuals have shelter during the winter months, working together to prevent anyone from being left out in the cold.
