“Drought-Stricken Couple Invests $20K in Deep Well”

Date:

Nancy Grove and Peter Gale faced a dilemma when their 200-year-old dug well dried up for the first time. They had to choose between enduring an ongoing drought or investing approximately $20,000 in a drilled well. Like many residents in Baxters Harbour, N.S., the couple relied on water deliveries from the local community center and a neighbor’s well via a hose connection.

The historical well on their Bay of Fundy property had supplied water to a church, school, and community members for many years. However, after monitoring the situation and realizing the water table wouldn’t replenish soon, they decided to drill a 91-meter deep well in early October to secure their water supply.

Ian Spooner, a hydrogeology professor at Acadia University, emphasized the importance of considering factors such as cost and property geology before opting for well drilling during drought conditions. He advised exploring alternative water sources like ponds, rivers, natural springs, water haulers, and community wells as interim solutions.

Some municipalities offer programs providing financial assistance for well installations. Spooner recommended consulting neighbors and professionals to assess well depth, yield, and water quality before proceeding with drilling. Understanding the property’s geology is crucial to avoid unsuccessful drilling attempts and groundwater contamination.

In a drought scenario, where the water table may not recover until spring, making an informed decision based on geological information is key. While droughts may be temporary, drilling a well can offer long-term water security for property owners.
