Rail services for commuters in the northeastern Catalonia region of Spain were halted on Wednesday following a collision involving a Barcelona commuter train the previous night, as confirmed by Spanish officials. The incident near Barcelona resulted in one fatality and 37 injuries, with emergency responders working overnight to rescue those affected. The train struck a retaining wall that collapsed onto the tracks, according to authorities.
This crash, occurring in northeastern Spain, coincided with a three-day period of national mourning following a separate fatal train crash in the southern part of the country on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least 42 individuals and injuring numerous others. The cause of the southern crash is still being investigated.
The victim of the Tuesday night incident was identified as a trainee train operator, as reported by regional authorities. Among the 37 individuals impacted, five sustained severe injuries, while six others were in a less critical condition according to emergency services.
The suspension of commuter train services on Wednesday morning led to significant traffic congestion on routes into Barcelona. Regional officials in Catalonia urged the public to minimize non-essential travel and encouraged companies to facilitate remote work during the disruptions.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences for the Barcelona incident, posting on X late Tuesday: “All my affection and solidarity with the victims and their families.”
While Spain’s high-speed rail system operates efficiently, the commuter rail service faces reliability challenges, although incidents resulting in injuries or fatalities are rare in both networks.
The commuter train accident occurred close to the town of Gelida, situated approximately 35 minutes outside Barcelona.
ADIF, Spain’s railway operator, indicated that the collapse of the retaining wall was likely triggered by heavy rainfall across the northeastern region. Consequently, commuter train services along the affected line were canceled by ADIF.

The nation continued to mourn the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred some 800 kilometers away on Sunday.
Fidel Saez tragically lost his mother in the incident, however, his two children, brother, and nephew survived. Their journey back home from the capital, where they had gone to see the musical The Lion King, turned into a nightmare.
