Teemu Touvinen and Jatta Leinonen emerged victorious at the 2026 U.K. Wife Carrying Race in Dorking, England. Touvinen sprinted with Leinonen on his shoulder, overcoming obstacles and competitors to clinch first place. The couple’s efforts were rewarded with a barrel of local ale.
While Touvinen feared losing the lead, Leinonen focused on maintaining her balance during the slippery race. She expressed relief at holding tight and hoping for the best. The duo savored their triumph by enjoying the champion’s malty beverage.
The Wife Carrying Race involves participants carrying another person over a 380-meter course with obstacles and hills. Originating as a Scandinavian tradition, the event has expanded to various countries, including the U.K., United States, and Canada. Despite its dark historical roots, the race is now a lighthearted and festive competition.
Participants are not limited to married couples and can carry anyone over 18 years old weighing at least 110 pounds. Those below the weight limit must carry a filled rucksack to meet the requirement. Organizers emphasize that participants can carry individuals other than their spouses, promoting inclusivity in the event.
Touvinen and Leinonen’s journey into wife carrying began in 2024 during the world championships near their Finnish hometown. Initially joining for fun, they discovered their talent for the sport. The couple’s dedication and training regimen led them to victory in the U.K., with plans to compete in the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland. If successful, they will receive another barrel of ale as a prize.
