French Skier Paco Rassat Scores First World Cup Win

Date:

Unheralded French skier Paco Rassat secured his maiden World Cup victory in Gurgl, Austria, by dominating the second slalom event of the Olympic season with an impressive second run. This achievement followed his recent sixth-place finish in the season-opening slalom in Levi, Finland.

Expressing his disbelief at his triumph, Rassat mentioned that he never thought such a feat was possible. With less than three months remaining until the Milan Cortina Winter Games, Rassat’s timing for this breakthrough victory couldn’t have been better as he aims to qualify for the Olympics by excelling in the World Cup circuit.

Competing in chilly but sunny conditions in the Austrian Alps, Rassat was in 14th place after the initial run but clocked the fastest time in the second run, clinching victory by a narrow margin of 0.07 seconds over Armand Marchant of Belgium, who achieved the country’s first-ever podium in Alpine skiing’s World Cup. Atle Lie McGrath of Norway, the leader after the first run, had to settle for third place, trailing Rassat by 0.09 seconds.

The elated Rassat, who outpaced all other racers by 0.27 seconds in the final run, described the moment as surreal, stating that his dream had come true. The 27-year-old skier, whose parents both have ties to the sport, emphasized the significance of having them present at the race, highlighting the role his father played as his first coach.

Rassat’s victory propelled him to the top of both the slalom and overall standings after three events, signaling a promising start to the season. With the men’s World Cup set to continue with a super-G event in Copper Mountain, Colorado, Rassat’s impressive performance has undoubtedly raised expectations for his future competitions.
