Trump Warns of Backing Significant Strike on Iran, Urges Hamas Disarm

Date:

US President Donald Trump has stated that the US would back another significant strike on Iran if it restarts its ballistic missile or nuclear weapons programs. Trump also issued a stern warning to Hamas, emphasizing severe consequences if the militant group fails to disarm.

Following discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump focused on advancing the fragile Gaza peace deal he facilitated and addressing Israeli apprehensions regarding Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump hinted that Tehran might be in the process of reviving its weapons programs post a previous US strike in June.

Expressing concerns about potential weapon buildup by Iran, Trump mentioned that the US is monitoring the situation closely. He emphasized the need to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption for military operations. Iran recently conducted missile drills, while Israel and Iran have been cautious about escalating tensions.

Trump emphasized the urgency of progressing to the next phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas but stressed the necessity of Hamas disarming. Failure to comply could lead to dire consequences, with Trump warning of “hell to pay” if Hamas does not lay down its weapons. Netanyahu echoed similar sentiments, indicating that Israel is prepared to take military action if necessary.

Despite some internal skepticism within Trump’s administration, the President maintained a supportive stance towards Netanyahu, emphasizing the importance of preventing adversaries from strengthening their military capabilities. Trump’s positive remarks towards Netanyahu included mention of a potential pardon for the Israeli prime minister regarding corruption allegations, although this statement was later refuted by Herzog’s office.

The ceasefire plan involving partial Israeli withdrawal and prisoner exchanges has seen some progress, but challenges remain in advancing to subsequent phases. Israel awaits the return of the remains of an Israeli hostage as a precondition for further steps in the plan. The situation in Gaza remains fragile, with civilians expressing fatigue from prolonged conflict and uncertainty about the ceasefire plan’s future.

As Netanyahu faces an upcoming election, he navigates the delicate balance of managing relations with Trump and advancing the ceasefire plan. While the ceasefire has reduced hostilities, sporadic violence persists, underscoring the challenges in achieving lasting peace in the region.
