A study published in PLOS ONE in 2024 highlighted that one-third of parents identifying as gentle parents experienced burnout and uncertainty in their parenting journey. Gentle parenting has gained popularity among Millennial and Gen Z parents, with a significant online presence through blogs, videos, and social media platforms.
Despite the online resources, Huszar found that the practical application of gentle parenting was more complex than expected. The scripted responses often fell short when faced with real-life challenges, leaving parents like Huszar feeling powerless and overwhelmed.
Dr. Ashley Miller, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University of British Columbia, emphasized that gentle parenting involves setting clear boundaries with empathy and explanation, not punishment. She noted that the online portrayal of gentle parenting sometimes overlooks the importance of establishing firm expectations and boundaries.
Huszar’s realization that her approach lacked authority led her to seek a more balanced parenting style that combines elements of both authoritative and gentle parenting. She acknowledged the need for setting limits while also allowing space for emotional expression and stress management.
