Marie-Philip Poulin’s Overtime Winner Lifts Montreal Victoire to Thrilling Victory

Date:

Marie-Philip Poulin scored her second goal of the game 3:12 into overtime to lead the Montreal Victoire to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Frost in Professional Women’s Hockey League play on Sunday. Skating past the Minnesota defense, Poulin’s backhand shot found the back of the net, beating goaltender Maddie Rooney in front of a packed crowd of 10,172 at Place Bell. This goal extended Poulin’s career-best point streak to five games.

Abby Roque also found the back of the net for Montreal, with Poulin providing an assist for a three-point performance. Ann-Renee Desbiens made 19 saves for the Victoire. On the other side, Mae Batherson and Kendall Coyne Schofield scored for Minnesota, with Rooney making 35 saves in her second consecutive start.

The game went into overtime due to two late goals in the third period. Coyne Schofield scored her league-leading eighth goal, giving Minnesota a 2-1 lead with 1:50 left. Then, with the extra attacker, Roque redirected Poulin’s pass into the net from the side with just 28.7 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game. Batherson opened the scoring with a shot from the left circle, beating Desbiens for her second goal of the season early in the second period.

Roque set up Poulin’s diving backhand goal with 11:37 left in the third period to level the score at 1-1. Despite being outshot 9-7 in the first period, Montreal outshot Minnesota 38-21 overall.

Montreal played without Erin Ambrose, who was sidelined due to illness, while Minnesota’s Dominique Petrie left the game due to injury and did not return.

Minnesota concluded a busy stretch with a four-game road trip over nine days, winning two games and earning six out of a possible 12 points. Montreal, led by Poulin, broke a three-game losing streak, climbing from the bottom of the PWHL standings with the help of Poulin and Roque’s late-game heroics.

The game’s key moment was the exchange of goals between Coyne Schofield and Roque in the final 1:50 of regulation, forcing the game into overtime. Kendall Cooper’s assist on Batherson’s goal set a new PWHL record with six consecutive games with an assist, while Batherson extended her point streak.

Next up, the Victoire will face the Vancouver Goldeneyes in Quebec City, while the Frost will host the Seattle Torrent in their upcoming games.
