“New York Sirens Dominate Season Opener with 4-0 Victory”

Date:

The New York Sirens are embarking on a new journey in their third PWHL season as the lone team in the league yet to experience a playoff game. Their season opener against the Ottawa Charge resulted in a 4-0 victory, showcasing their strong start.

Despite the departure of four key scorers from the previous season and their long-time starting goaltender Corinne Schroder moving to the Seattle Torrent, the Sirens (1-0-0-0) are adapting well. Kayle Osborne has seamlessly taken over as the No. 1 goaltender, securing a shutout against the Ottawa Charge (0-0-0-1) for the second time in her PWHL career.

Following an impressive performance, forward Taylor Girard scored a hat trick, and Maja Nylen Persson netted an empty-netter, leading New York’s offense to explode with four goals in the final 12 minutes of play.

Kristýna Kaltounková, New York’s top pick from this year’s draft, made her presence known early in her debut with a physical play that resulted in a penalty. Ottawa briefly capitalized on the advantage, only to have the goal disallowed due to having too many players on the ice.

The game saw escalating tensions, leading to the ejection of New York captain Micah Zandee-Hart for a cross-check. Despite the physicality, players like Gabbie Hughes embraced the intensity, acknowledging it as part of the league’s dynamic.

Gwyneth Philips, Ottawa’s goaltender and last season’s playoff MVP, put on a solid performance, keeping the Charge competitive against the Sirens for most of the game. New York’s head coach, Greg Fargo, commended Philips’ efforts while emphasizing the need for more offensive attempts.

New York’s breakthrough came in the third period, with Girard and Wheeler combining for crucial goals. Osborne’s unbeaten record in Ottawa continued, supported by friends and family in attendance, adding a personal touch to her performance.

The Ottawa Charge faced a scoreless start to their season, reflecting their ongoing struggles with scoring. Despite the loss, head coach Carla MacLeod remained optimistic, noting the team’s potential and upcoming matchups against the Vancouver Goldeneyes and Minnesota Frost.

Looking ahead, the Charge will play three consecutive home games, while the Sirens will hit the road to face the Montreal Victoire before returning home to host the Goldeneyes.
