Yannick Schwaller, hailing from Geneva, Switzerland, secured a spot in Sunday’s final at the HearingLife Canadian Open in Saskatoon by defeating John Shuster from Duluth, Minnesota, with a score of 7-5 on Saturday evening.
In the earlier quarterfinals on Saturday, Schwaller triumphed over Marc Muskatewitz of Germany 7-1. He took an early lead by scoring three points in the first end against Shuster. Despite Shuster managing to level the game 4-4 after five ends by scoring two points in the fourth and one point in the fifth, Schwaller regained control by scoring two points in the sixth end and then securing a single point in the seventh and eighth ends to clinch the victory at the Grand Slam of Curling event held at Merlis Belsher Place.
The upcoming final will see Schwaller facing off against Ross Whyte, who defeated Bruce Mouat 6-4 in an all-Scotland semifinal match. Whyte managed to turn the tide in his favor after trailing 4-2 by scoring two points in the seventh end and then stealing two points in the eighth to claim the win.
On the women’s side, Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa earned a spot in Sunday’s final by defeating Momoha Tabata with a score of 7-5 after trailing 4-1 in the early ends. Fujisawa staged a comeback by scoring three points in the fifth end to level the game and then secured a lead by stealing two points in the sixth end.
In the other women’s semifinal, Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland secured a spot in the final by narrowly defeating Sayaka Yoshimura of Japan 5-4. Yoshimura had tied the game 4-4 in the seventh end, but Tirinzoni managed to secure the victory by scoring one point with the hammer.
Yoshimura had advanced to the semifinals by defeating Kerri Einarson from Gimli, Manitoba, with a score of 9-6 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
