“Rail Sabotage Disrupts Winter Olympics in Bologna”

Date:

Saboteurs targeted rail infrastructure near Bologna, disrupting train services during the Winter Olympics’ first full day. Police reported three separate incidents causing delays of over two hours for various train services. The Transport Ministry condemned the sabotage as a serious act, reminiscent of a similar incident during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The ministry, led by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, reassured that these actions do not tarnish Italy’s reputation, especially during the Games. State-owned railway Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) had to briefly close the high-speed station in Bologna due to the disruptions but reported a gradual return to normal operation by Saturday afternoon.

Authorities found a track switch cabin set on fire near Pesaro, severed electrical cables detecting train speeds in Bologna, and an explosive device near another track location. The incidents, although unclaimed, seemed coordinated. Bologna serves as a crucial rail junction for Italy’s east-west and north-south connections to cities like Milan and Venice, the latter being accessible from Cortina, a co-host of the Winter Games.

No one has taken responsibility for the sabotage, and investigations are ongoing. The disruptions highlight vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure during major events like the Olympics.
