A mining company based in Vancouver reported that ten of its workers were kidnapped from a project site in Concordia, located in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa. This area has been affected by a cartel conflict since 2024. Vizsla Silver confirmed the incident, stating that the situation is being investigated with limited available information.
The company informed Mexican authorities about the abduction and mentioned that their crisis management and security teams are actively involved. As a precautionary measure, Vizsla Silver halted some operations at the site where they are developing the Panuco silver and gold mining project in Sinaloa.
Local reports indicate that most of the abducted employees are Mexican nationals. The Sinaloan attorney general’s office has initiated an investigation into the incident following a report received on January 24 regarding the disappearance of the individuals. State authorities, along with federal agencies and the military, are conducting search operations. A recent search warrant was executed as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to Latinus, the employees were taken by armed individuals from a rented residence in Concordia on January 23. Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the security incident in Concordia and stated that they are closely monitoring the situation. Canadian embassy officials in Mexico are coordinating with local authorities, and as of now, there is no information on any Canadian citizens being affected by the incident.
The Security and Citizen Protection Secretariat of Mexico has not responded to requests for comments. Sinaloa has been plagued by internal conflicts within the Sinaloa cartel, resulting in numerous casualties and disappearances in the region. Vizsla Silver is yet to provide further details on the incident.
