Train Derailment in Kamloops Sparks Fuel Spill Cleanup

Date:

Cleanup operations are in progress following a train derailment near Kamloops, British Columbia, that resulted in a fuel spill. The incident occurred approximately 20 kilometers west of the city at 7 p.m. on November 1, as reported by Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).

CPKC stated that a total of 17 rail cars, both loaded and empty, went off the tracks during the event. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Michael Grenier, Electoral Area J director for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, emphasized the immediate concern for public safety following the derailment.

After confirming the absence of any casualties, attention shifted to safeguarding the water supply, particularly for residents relying on Kamloops Lake for their domestic water needs. While the Savona Community Water System is currently unaffected, private water system providers are collaborating with Interior Health to evaluate potential implications.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. CPKC disclosed that among the derailed cars, four contained fuel, with two experiencing fuel leakage into the nearby area. Additionally, five rail cars were transporting gypsum, a material used in drywall production, while one carried pulp products. The rest of the rail cars were empty, including three that previously transported gasoline.

Grenier, who has a view of the cleanup site from his residence, observed the ongoing efforts to mitigate the spill on both land and in the lake. A containment device known as a boom has been deployed on the lake to manage the spillage.

CPKC teams, along with environmental experts, are currently on site to assess the situation and commence cleanup activities, according to a statement from the Ministry of Environment and Parks. The provincial government’s environmental emergency branch has also mobilized resources to address the spill.
