During a press briefing on Air Force One, Trump evaded questions regarding the timing of the tariff increase, stating, “I don’t know when it’s going to kick in, and we’ll see, but I don’t really want to discuss it.” However, he extensively discussed an advertisement by the Ontario government, which he claimed led to the suspension of trade negotiations with Canada and the subsequent tariff escalation.
Contrary to historical evidence indicating Ronald Reagan’s opposition to tariffs on economic allies like Canada, Trump insisted that the ad misrepresented Reagan’s stance on tariffs. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on a case involving Trump’s imposition of broad tariffs on Canada and other countries, citing reasons such as fentanyl trafficking, illegal immigration, and trade imbalances.
When asked about meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney at an upcoming summit, Trump expressed reluctance, stating, “I don’t want to meet with him. I’m not going to be meeting with him for a while now.” Despite senior officials negotiating potential tariff relief on steel and aluminum imports with Canada, Trump abruptly terminated the talks.
The White House hinted that the Ontario government’s ad was not the sole reason behind Trump’s aggressive trade stance against Canada. Officials criticized Canadian authorities for their handling of negotiations, with the U.S. Treasury Secretary condemning the ad as interference in U.S. affairs and labeled it as propaganda against tariffs.
