“Venezuelan Opposition Leader Presents Nobel Prize to Trump”

Date:

Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, aiming to influence the direction of Venezuela’s political landscape. Trump confirmed his intent to keep the medal and expressed gratitude for the gesture in a social media post.

During their meeting, Machado commended Trump for his dedication to the Venezuelan people’s freedom. Despite Trump previously dismissing the idea of appointing Machado as Venezuela’s leader, she sought to engage with him following his interest in the Nobel Peace Prize. While Machado transferred the physical medal to Trump, the honor itself remains hers, as per the Norwegian Nobel Institute’s regulations.

The meeting between Machado and Trump, followed by discussions with bipartisan senators on Capitol Hill, marked their first in-person encounter. Although Trump acknowledged the importance of the meeting, he maintained his pragmatic stance on Machado’s current level of support within Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez has garnered growing influence with Trump’s backing, raising skepticism about future electoral processes. Trump’s focus on rebuilding Venezuela’s economy and accessing its oil reserves has led to recent seizures of Venezuela-linked tankers, as part of efforts to pressure Maduro’s regime.

The U.S. government’s ongoing actions to control Venezuelan oil resources and seize tankers associated with sanctioned producers align with its strategic objectives in Venezuela. These maneuvers have drawn criticism and condemnation from various quarters, including the recent seizure of a Russian-flagged tanker shadowed by a submarine.
