Approximately 30 WestJet flight attendants staged a demonstration outside Halifax Stanfield International Airport as part of a nationwide strike initiated due to unsuccessful contract talks with the airline. All WestJet flights to and from Halifax were canceled for the day, leaving numerous passengers stranded. Ed and Ann Meehan, tourists from the UK, were among those affected, enduring flight rebookings and cancellations before opting to pay extra for an alternative flight with an extended layover in Iceland. The couple, regular visitors to Canada, expressed disappointment and stated they do not plan to return due to the incident.
Passenger Ryan Callbeck, whose flight to Regina was canceled, faced challenges contacting customer service for assistance. While sympathetic towards the flight attendants’ cause, he lamented the disruption to his travel plans and the additional expenses incurred. A total of 4,287 WestJet flight attendants across Canada went on strike over salary and working conditions, citing issues of inadequate compensation and unpaid pre-departure tasks. WestJet assured affected passengers of refunds or alternative accommodations as necessary.
Authorities at Halifax Stanfield International Airport advised passengers with WestJet bookings in the coming days to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport.
