Filmmaker Drew Hyttenrauch seized a unique opportunity to produce a significant project while shedding light on the growing needs within the Down syndrome community, a cause close to his heart as he navigates the challenges alongside his sister, Natalie.
In a recent endeavor in Windsor, Ont., Drew and Natalie were immersed in the production of a commercial for a Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) campaign during Down Syndrome Week. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the aging population of individuals with Down syndrome and the need for enhanced healthcare support as they grow older.
The CDSS is fundraising for an accredited training program tailored to address the specific needs of individuals with Down syndrome and bridge the existing healthcare disparities. Down syndrome, characterized by a chromosomal arrangement associated with chromosome 21, affects over 22,000 individuals in Canada, with potential health issues including congenital heart conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, thyroid complications, and respiratory infections.
Drew, who runs a production company in Windsor, expressed deep personal investment in the project due to his role as a caregiver for Natalie and their shared concerns about health and aging. The commercial, featuring individuals with Down syndrome in everyday scenarios, received contributions from actors across Ontario and a local crew, offering a polished production quality typically associated with larger cities.
The video showcases individuals with Down syndrome engaged in regular activities like meeting friends for coffee or going to work, emphasizing their ability to thrive in various settings. Despite some initial hesitations, Natalie participated in the project, receiving praise from Drew for her performance.
Personal Support Worker (PSW) Natalie Hall, who collaborates with Natalie Hyttenrauch, highlighted the importance of expanding PSW services to support adults with Down syndrome, urging more PSWs to explore this field of healthcare.
Drew described the project as the most meaningful and fulfilling endeavor he has undertaken, emphasizing the personal significance of creating a campaign that resonates with audiences and effectively communicates the message of inclusion and support for individuals with Down syndrome.
