A tragic incident has led to the passing of a Winnipeg high school football player who sustained a severe neck injury in a recent game. The player, identified as Darius Hartshorne but known affectionately as Dee, succumbed to his injuries after a challenging 12-day battle. Stephanie Ciaralli, who was like a mother to Dee, expressed her deep sorrow and pride in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Hartshorne, a Grade 12 student representing the Sisler Spartans, suffered the injury during a game against the Tec Voc Hornets while returning the opening kickoff. The Winnipeg School Division superintendent, Matt Henderson, extended support to the affected schools and emphasized the importance of assisting students, staff, and families during this difficult time.
Described as a valued member of the Spartans, head coach Sean Esselmont praised Hartshorne as a genuine and remarkable young man. The team has been honoring him by wearing decals featuring his jersey number and prominently displaying his jersey at games. Hartshorne was placed in an induced coma due to complications from the injury but unfortunately did not recover.
Manitoba politicians, including Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew, offered their condolences to Hartshorne’s family and the school community. Councilor Vivian Santos also paid tribute to Hartshorne’s kindness and strength during a city council meeting.
Hartshorne, who turned 17 while in the hospital, received an outpouring of support from the community. Despite the efforts and hopes for his recovery, his passing has left many saddened by the loss of a young life.
