CBS Postpones 60 Minutes Report on El Salvador Prison

Date:

CBS News decided to postpone the airing of a 60 Minutes report on El Salvador’s CECOT prison just before its scheduled broadcast on Sunday, citing the need for additional reporting. The network announced the delay on social media platforms, explaining that the segment titled ‘Inside CECOT’ would be broadcast at a later date.

According to a note written by correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, the segment had undergone multiple screenings and received clearance from CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. Alfonsi expressed disappointment in the decision to pull the segment, attributing it to political motives rather than editorial concerns.

CECOT is a large prison facility in El Salvador where numerous Venezuelan migrants, many of whom have not faced trial, have been detained. Human rights organizations have criticized the prison for its severe conditions.

CBS, which is owned by Paramount Skydance, faced scrutiny for its decision, especially after Paramount’s settlement of a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump over a previous 60 Minutes interview. The network’s commitment to representing diverse viewpoints was highlighted following the acquisition by Skydance Media.

The network removed the link to the segment page, which was supposed to feature Alfonsi’s interviews with deportees recounting their experiences in the prison. Executive Bari Weiss raised concerns and requested additional content for the segment, including an interview with a White House official from the Trump administration.

Alfonsi noted that efforts were made to obtain comments from various government departments but faced challenges in receiving responses. The network and Alfonsi did not provide immediate comments on the situation.

As CBS undergoes changes under Weiss’s leadership, the decision to delay the 60 Minutes report reflects the evolving dynamics within the network. Weiss, known for her background in print journalism, has recently taken on a significant role in reshaping CBS News.
