Gospel Legend Richard Smallwood Dies at 77

Renowned gospel singer and eight-time Grammy Award nominee, Richard Smallwood, has passed away at the age of 77. Smallwood succumbed to complications from kidney failure at a rehabilitation and nursing center in Sandy Spring, Md., as confirmed by his representative, Bill Carpenter.

Throughout his life, Smallwood battled various health issues, finding solace and strength in his music. According to Carpenter, Smallwood’s unwavering dedication to music was his driving force, keeping him alive and inspired. His musical creations resonated with audiences and artists alike, with notable performers such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Destiny’s Child, and Boyz II Men interpreting his songs over the years.

Chaka Khan, a fellow musician, expressed her admiration for Smallwood’s impact on the gospel music genre, stating that his work not only inspired but transformed her own musical journey. Smallwood’s musical legacy extended beyond his own performances, with his compositions leaving a lasting impression on generations of listeners.

Born in Atlanta on November 30, 1948, Smallwood’s musical journey began at an early age when he started playing the piano by ear. By the age of seven, he was already receiving formal piano lessons. Raised primarily in Washington, D.C., by his mother and stepfather, who was a prominent pastor, Smallwood’s musical talents flourished.

Smallwood’s contributions to gospel music were groundbreaking, particularly during his time at Howard University, where he was a pioneer member of the university’s gospel choir. Following his graduation, he went on to establish the Richard Smallwood Singers, infusing traditional gospel music with a contemporary flair. His choir, Vision, produced some of his most iconic gospel hits, including the renowned track “Total Praise.”

Despite facing health challenges in his later years, Smallwood’s music continued to resonate with audiences from diverse backgrounds. His enduring legacy is a testament to his musical genius and the profound impact he had on the world of gospel music.
