Mother Honors Late Daughter’s Graduation Dream

Date:

Susan Petley felt a surge of emotions as she made her way across the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. This moment had been a long-held dream for her, but the circumstances were bittersweet.

Reflecting on the mix of hurt, anger, and love that brought her to tears, Petley accepted her late daughter Bethany Anne Coupe’s high school diploma, who had passed away from cancer in April. Holding onto her other daughter, Cynthia, by her side, Petley expressed her pride but also heartbreak that Bethany couldn’t witness the moment.

Being among the initial group of over 200 graduates at the school, Petley shared that her 35-year-old daughter had faced health challenges for years, struggling to complete her studies due to battling pancreatic cancer and a limited prognosis. Despite her illness, Bethany persevered, studying from her hospital bed with the support of the school’s staff.

Initially puzzled by her daughter’s determination, Petley later realized that Bethany’s goal was to make her mother proud and present her with the ultimate gift of graduating high school. Bethany had aspirations of attending St. Clair College to pursue a career aiding children or animals.

During the ceremony, alongside Petley and Cynthia, six siblings eagerly received their diplomas together. Rodas Tesfalem Arey, one of the siblings from Sudan, expressed immense pride in their collective achievement, with each sibling having unique career aspirations ranging from mechanics to becoming a pharmacist technician.

Grateful for the school’s encouragement and guidance, Rodas acknowledged the staff at St. Michael’s for inspiring them to pursue their ambitions. Petley, amidst the emotional evening, emphasized the lesson she learned from her daughter’s unwavering determination: no matter the obstacles, true desires can be achieved with perseverance.

In a touching conclusion, Petley encouraged others to follow their dreams, drawing inspiration from her daughter’s legacy of resilience and achievement.
