The Vancouver Goldeneyes are making history in their debut season in the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Jenn Gardiner scored her first goal for the team, a short-handed one, while Emerance Maschmeyer achieved the franchise’s first shutout in a 4-0 victory against the New York Sirens. This season offers a unique opportunity for several local players to showcase their talents in front of enthusiastic fans who have long awaited professional hockey in their city.
Among the five Goldeneyes from British Columbia is Surrey native Jenn Gardiner, who expressed her joy at contributing to the team’s success. Abby Boreen also had a standout performance with a multi-goal game. The team’s home record stands at 2-0 after a challenging road trip, highlighting the importance of the home crowd’s support for head coach Brian Idalski.
The players, including goalie Emerance Maschmeyer, acknowledge the impact of playing in front of a supportive audience. The team’s engagement with young fans was evident during “Kids Takeover Day” at Pacific Coliseum, underscoring the mutual inspiration between players and children aspiring to professional hockey careers.
In addition to Gardiner, other B.C. players on the Vancouver roster include Katie Chan, Hannah Miller, Nina Jobst-Smith, and Kimberly Newell. Even players from the opposing team, such as Micah Zandee-Hart and Anne Cherkowski of the New York Sirens, recognized the growth of women’s hockey in the province and the significance of Vancouver having its own team.
Despite the loss, Cherkowski emphasized the vibrant energy and support for women’s hockey showcased at Pacific Coliseum. The Goldeneyes continue to draw impressive crowds, with over 9,500 fans attending their recent home game, following a successful season opener that attracted nearly 15,000 spectators.
