“Total Eclipse of the Heart” Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75

Date:

Singer Bonnie Tyler has passed away at the age of 75 in a hospital located in Portugal, as confirmed by a statement released on her social media profiles. The Grammy-nominated artist underwent emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, Portugal, where she resided, back in early May. Following the surgery, she was placed in a medically induced coma for several weeks.

Her family announced her unexpected passing on Wednesday night. Tyler, recognized for her distinctive raspy voice, was most famous for her 1983 hit ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped charts in Canada, the U.K., and the Billboard Hot 100. This success led to a Grammy nomination for both the song and the album “Faster Than the Speed of Night” in 1984.

Hailing from Wales, Tyler initially gained recognition with the 1978 Canadian hit “It’s A Heartache,” which also made its mark on the Billboard charts. The Welsh First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth, expressed condolences, describing Tyler as a true icon who brought joy to many through her music.

Despite her recent health challenges and canceled concert appearances post-surgery, Tyler continued her musical journey until her demise. Tributes poured in from fellow artists such as Bryan Adams, Howard Jones, Cliff Richard, and actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who praised Tyler’s exceptional talent and humor.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a lasting classic, spent four weeks at the top of the charts and garnered over a billion views on Spotify. The song’s enduring popularity led to various cover versions and appearances in films and during real eclipses in 2017 and 2024.

Tyler’s collaboration with producer Jim Steinman on “Total Eclipse of the Heart” marked a significant milestone in her career. The accompanying music video, shot in a gothic setting, showcased Tyler’s unique style and vocal prowess. Tyler and Steinman further collaborated on the hit “Holding Out For a Hero.”

Born as Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, Tyler’s passion for singing blossomed from an early age, influenced by legendary artists like the Beatles and Janis Joplin. Her distinctive husky voice emerged following throat surgery in 1976, shaping her signature sound.

Over the years, Tyler continued to release music and captivate audiences worldwide. From Grammy nominations to Eurovision performances, her musical legacy remains cherished by fans globally. Tyler’s enduring career and creative collaborations have left an indelible mark on the music industry.

The world mourns the loss of a talented artist, Bonnie Tyler, whose music will continue to resonate for generations to come.
