Leaders from various levels of government, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, paid tribute to the strength and dignity of Tumbler Ridge residents during a vigil following the tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including six children. The devastating incident has deeply impacted the close-knit community in northeastern British Columbia and the entire nation.
At the vigil, political differences were set aside as federal leaders, including Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, and NDP interim Leader Don Davies, stood together to honor the victims.
During the event, Prime Minister Carney emphasized the importance of physical presence over remote support, stating that Canadians stand united with the people of Tumbler Ridge in their grief and offering to share their burden.
The vigil commenced with a rendition of the national anthem, followed by Mayor Darryl Krakowka’s call for a moment of silence to remember those lost. Indigenous leaders also provided prayers and words of comfort to the gathering.
Acknowledging the community’s past challenges, including economic hardships and wildfires, Carney praised Tumbler Ridge’s resilience and unity in times of adversity. He specifically recognized the swift actions of first responders and teachers who protected students during the tragic event.
Conservative Leader Poilievre emphasized the individual stories of the victims and commended the community for its unwavering support for one another. Poilievre underscored the unity among Tumbler Ridge residents, describing them as exceptional individuals who rise above ordinary expectations.
The vigil concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony led by Mayor Krakowka to honor the victims. Earlier in the day, federal leaders visited the memorial site, laying flowers in remembrance of the victims.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by all party leaders during the visit, highlighting the shared sense of grief and the importance of being together during such challenging times.
The community’s resilience and mutual support were further emphasized by B.C. Premier David Eby, who recounted a heroic tale of high school students banding together during the tragic event. Eby acknowledged the students’ bravery as the foundation for the community’s recovery.
The dignified gathering exemplified unity and compassion as the nation mourned the loss and offered support to the grieving community of Tumbler Ridge.
