Toronto Woman Overcomes Obsessive Work Habits for Financial Wellness

Date:

Danica Nelson, residing in Toronto, shares her experience of getting caught up in obsessive work habits driven by a fear of financial instability. Growing up with a single Jamaican mother, Danica imbibed a deep-rooted fear of scarcity, leading her to prioritize financial security above all else.

Her relentless pursuit of financial independence led her to work multiple jobs since her teenage years, always striving to avoid debt. Even after graduating debt-free, she maintained frugal spending habits, never carrying a credit card balance and prioritizing savings.

However, the constant drive to avoid debt took a toll on Danica’s mental and physical well-being. Burnt out from juggling corporate responsibilities and side hustles, she eventually took a six-month sabbatical to prioritize self-care and reflection.

Returning refreshed and confident, Danica landed a higher-paying job but fell back into old patterns of overworking to maintain financial stability. It took a layoff for her to realize the importance of prioritizing her health over work. Embracing a period of rest and reflection, she founded Liberty Leave, a company helping women plan sabbaticals without compromising their financial futures.

Danica now values wealth beyond monetary terms, emphasizing time freedom, community, and a balanced nervous system. While still mindful of her finances, she no longer sacrifices her well-being for financial security. Danica’s journey highlights the significance of finding a balance between work, financial stability, and personal well-being.
