Amid the ongoing ceasefire efforts to end the conflict, Israel has reopened the sole pedestrian crossing to Egypt, allowing dozens of Palestinians to either leave or return to Gaza. The reopening comes with strict limitations on access, as 50 Palestinians are currently being processed at the Israeli-controlled side of the Palestinian border, awaiting entry into Gaza after undergoing security checks.
Gaza health officials have highlighted the urgent need for approximately 20,000 Palestinian children and adults requiring medical care to leave the devastated territory through the crossing. Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, emphasized that the current daily limit of people allowed to exit is insufficient, especially for critical cases such as patients in need of immediate surgeries or cancer treatments.
The Rafah crossing, jointly controlled by Israel, is crucial for the movement of patients seeking medical treatment abroad. Despite efforts to facilitate these transfers, delays have been attributed to Israeli security checks, according to Palestinian officials. The crossing is a vital lifeline for many Palestinians, including Moustafa Abdel Hadi, a patient at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza, who is among thousands hoping to receive medical care abroad.
Egypt has prepared to receive Palestinian patients evacuated from Gaza through Rafah, with about 150 hospitals across the country on standby. Additionally, the Egyptian Red Crescent has established “safe spaces” at the crossing to support those arriving from Gaza. The future of the crossing’s operations will involve vetting individuals for entry and exit, overseen by European Union border patrol agents along with a small Palestinian presence.
Meanwhile, violence persisted in Gaza as Gaza hospital officials reported a three-year-old Palestinian boy killed by Israeli navy fire at a tent camp in Khan Younis. The incident adds to the toll of casualties since the ceasefire, with more than 520 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces, including over 100 children, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.
Looking ahead, the ceasefire’s second phase entails the establishment of a new Palestinian governing committee in Gaza, deploying an international security force, disarming Hamas, and initiating reconstruction efforts in the region.
