“Chief of Staff Resigns Over Epstein Ambassador Scandal”

Date:

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s chief of staff resigned on Sunday amidst controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States, given his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Morgan McSweeney acknowledged his role in advising Starmer to appoint the 72-year-old Mandelson to the crucial diplomatic position in 2024. In a statement, McSweeney expressed regret over the decision, stating that Mandelson’s appointment had negatively impacted their party, the nation, and public trust in politics.

Starmer is currently under scrutiny and facing questions about his decision-making following the release of new documents, part of a significant collection of Epstein files disclosed in the U.S. These documents indicated that Mandelson may have shared sensitive market information with Epstein during his tenure as the UK government’s business secretary amid the 2008 financial crisis.

The government led by Starmer has committed to releasing internal emails and other records related to Mandelson’s appointment to demonstrate that Mandelson provided misleading information to officials. Mandelson, a prominent figure in the Labour Party with a history as a cabinet minister and ambassador, has not faced any legal charges despite the ongoing investigation.

Recent developments have reignited concerns about Starmer’s judgment, with critics highlighting his previous dismissal of Mandelson from the ambassadorial role in September due to earlier revelations about his association with Epstein. The emergence of incriminating emails from the U.S. Justice Department has intensified doubts about Starmer’s leadership, prompting calls for greater accountability in the decision-making process.
