Conservationist Mark Thomas recently shared insights on the remarkable breeding success of a male Montagu’s harrier in the United Kingdom. The male, known as AU for the chemical symbol for gold, has played a crucial role in sustaining the British population of this rare bird species.
AU, a 10-year-old male, has fathered a total of 16 offspring, with 10 born in the last two years alone. Thomas, the species lead for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), emphasized AU’s vital contribution in upholding the species in the U.K., describing him as the primary force behind their survival.
Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe during the spring after spending winters in Africa and parts of Asia. Despite being classified as a species of least concern globally, the U.K. population of these birds has faced significant decline over the years.
The successful breeding efforts led by AU have been pivotal in replenishing the species in the U.K. After raising four chicks in 2025, AU returned this year to engage in elaborate mating displays, attracting the attention of multiple female harriers. Ultimately, three females vied for AU’s affections, with two remaining to nest with him.
The offspring from AU’s recent matings, including six chicks, provide hope for the species’ future in the U.K. Conservationists are closely monitoring the young harriers, with two males from a previous brood already sighted in the country. To safeguard the new hatchlings, researchers have implemented protective measures around their nests on a confidential location within a British farm.
Furthermore, the RSPB has equipped two juvenile harriers with satellite trackers for the first time, enabling tracking of their migration patterns. This initiative aims to gather valuable data on the birds’ movements and potential return to the U.K. for breeding, signaling a significant step towards conservation efforts for Montagu’s harriers in the region.
