“NATO Ex-Chief Warns of Russia’s Gain Amid Middle East Crisis”

Date:

The ex-NATO secretary general stated his belief that NATO allies are unlikely to be further drawn into the Middle East conflict. However, he expressed worry that the ongoing conflict with Iran could benefit Russia’s economy and divert global attention from the Ukraine invasion.

In an interview on CBC’s The House, Jens Stoltenberg emphasized NATO’s historical lack of involvement in major Middle East conflicts and stressed the importance of avoiding entanglement in the current conflict.

While he is confident that NATO allies will steer clear of deeper involvement in the conflict that commenced with Israel and the U.S. launching air attacks on Iran two weeks ago, Stoltenberg raised concerns about the broader repercussions.

Stoltenberg highlighted the significant economic implications, including soaring energy prices that could dampen global growth and escalate inflation.

Currently serving as Norway’s finance minister, Stoltenberg expressed his unease over the combined impact of human suffering and economic fallout.

Reports from Iran indicate over 1,300 casualties, while Israel has confirmed 12 fatalities. The U.S. has lost a minimum of 11 troops, with eight sustaining severe injuries.

In response, Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil passage, leading to a spike in oil prices, reaching $100 US per barrel. This has prompted governments to tap into emergency reserves.

Stoltenberg expressed concerns over the global economic repercussions and recent U.S. decisions to exempt Russian oil from sanctions for a month, potentially bolstering the Russian economy.
