“Quebec Conservatives Divided Over Don Cherry Order of Canada Nomination”

Date:

Opposition within the Quebec faction of the federal Conservative party is growing against the party’s proposed nomination of controversial hockey commentator Don Cherry for the Order of Canada.

Quebec lieutenant Pierre Paul-Hus expressed his disapproval in a recent social media post, citing Cherry’s “unacceptable remarks towards the Quebec nation and francophones.” The Order of Canada is typically bestowed in recognition of exceptional achievements, significant contributions to the nation, or outstanding dedication to a community.

Conservative MP Andrew Lawton, who initiated the nomination, has been actively gathering signatures through an online petition on the party’s website. Lawton defended Cherry, highlighting his long-standing support for hockey, veterans, and his outspoken nature.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who endorsed the petition along with other party members, praised Cherry for embodying Canadian pride. Cherry, known for his colorful suits during his nearly four-decade tenure on “Coach’s Corner” on Hockey Night in Canada, has faced criticism for his contentious remarks over the years.

Despite some Conservative support for Cherry, Quebec MPs like Luc Berthold and Gérard Deltell have strongly opposed the nomination, citing Cherry’s disrespectful comments towards francophones and others. They argue that the Order of Canada should be reserved for individuals who promote unity and inclusivity, values they believe Cherry’s past conduct contradicts.

While some Conservatives back Cherry’s nomination, the controversy has sparked a debate within the party. Critics argue that Cherry’s history of divisive remarks disqualifies him from being considered for such a prestigious honor. The NDP in Quebec has also condemned the nomination, urging the Conservatives to withdraw their proposal.

Cherry, a polarizing figure in Canadian sports, has received other accolades, including induction into the Canadian Walk of Fame and the upcoming Order of Ontario. The final decision on his potential Order of Canada nomination remains a subject of intense debate within political and public spheres.
