“Canada’s Job Losses Surge, Outperforms U.S. in Job Creation”

Date:

The Canadian economy experienced a significant job loss in February, the highest in the past four years. Despite this, Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted that Canada has created over 80,000 jobs in the last six months, outperforming the United States, which only added 6,000 jobs. Carney emphasized that Canada’s wage growth at 4.2% is the fastest in years, with an unemployment rate of 6.7%, lower than a year ago.

Statistics Canada reported that Canada lost 84,000 jobs in February, the highest monthly job loss since January 2022 when over 203,000 jobs were lost.

Contrary to Carney’s positive outlook, the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics indicated a less optimistic view of the American job market. The U.S. lost 6,000 jobs in the last six months, with fluctuations in job gains and losses.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney for the job losses, attributing them to Liberal policies. Carney defended his government’s actions, stating that investments are being made to stabilize the economy amidst external trade challenges, particularly from the United States.

Overall, Carney remains confident in Canada’s economic resilience despite the recent job losses and external uncertainties impacting the economy.
