British Columbia’s government has revealed plans to establish a “forest trade office” in London, U.K., to enhance exports to Europe amid escalating U.S. fees on Canadian forest products. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar expressed concerns over the current reliance on the United States and emphasized the need to diversify markets. Crown Corporation Forestry Innovation Investment will set up the office in the U.K., aiming to strengthen sales in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The province highlighted its existing presence in China, India, and Vietnam, along with established connections in Japan and South Korea.
Parmar criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his actions impacting the forestry industry, stressing the importance of expanding export opportunities for British Columbia. The latest data for June 2025 shows that the U.S. remains the primary market for B.C.’s forest exports, followed by China and Japan. The imposition of tariffs and duties, coupled with reduced access to fiber supply, has led to job losses and production cutbacks, necessitating government support.
In response to the challenges faced, the provincial government plans to launch online anti-tariff advertisements targeting American consumers, focusing on the forest sector. Despite Trump’s objections to similar ads from Ontario, B.C. Premier David Eby defended the strategy, emphasizing the need to educate Americans about the impact of tariffs on pricing. B.C.’s ads, scheduled for release in November, will be exclusively online, as confirmed by Ravi Kahlon, B.C.’s minister of economic growth.
